💌 note from cp
Two Years.
That's how long its been since forced closures were lifted on nightlife venues (surreal eh?)
Inspired by the legendary "fish-ness list", we started this newsletter back then with the intention of giving new promoters a boost, cross-pollinating community bubbles, and addressing the shrinking reach of social media.
I think now, the time has come to start narrowing down a more specific vibe as far as which events we feature and why -- and which ones to skip.
Thoughts? Just hit reply to hit my personal inbox. I would LOVE to hear from you.
We're also looking into other formats that could make it easier to search or share events, as well as different options for ways peeps can support the project directly.
Wanna help? Hit me up.
Shout out to my wonderful volunteer in crime, Questhe, who has been integral behind the scenes. Her unwavering commitment, brain-power, and attention to detail make her the ideal counterpart to my more dynamic, cyclical nature.
I was very curious to see if we could actually put this out consistently to an engaged audience for a solid amount of time. Two years later, I'm still blown away by our stats every issue. THANK YOU for being here.
big love from your no-fun-city fun grrl xoxoxo CP

Happy to be bringing to you all another fun time on the Patio, being 10 years strong 🙂 and thank you so much for your support.
This event is going to be a fantastic way to say, for myself anyways, goodbye to that little place that has had so many great memories for myself, and I know a lot of you also. We will be going hard with 15 hours of music, 2 locations; most of you know how we roll down there but, once again, I would just like to say, stay clear of the transit gate, and please, no hanging out on the road.
Also, I will be doing my normal walk around as I always do, so please, let's all do our part. There will be free water for all your thirsty needs, and washrooms also. Not going to say much more than you already know, so see you all soon; May the 4th be with you.

Vancouver experimental electronic duo CHXMERAS present the release their debut album, Terminal City, in spatial sound at Lobe Studio. https://chxmeras.bandcamp.com/ | https://linktr.ee/chxmeras
Haunted by the ghosts of technological alienation and fractured identities, Terminal City is a crepuscular soundtrack to lost futures, a reckoning with our fragmented present, and immersive, cinematic passage through the ruins of late stage capitalism, environmental degradation, and urban decay.
CHXMERAS weave film samples and field recordings with elements of dub, techno, ambient, and hip-hop into cinematic, kinetic sounds that moves from fractal noise and abstract beats to polyrhythmic modular synthesis.
The album is available on limited edition cassette and digital via Virtua94 Records.
Limited copies of the cassette will be available for purchase at this event.

May 4 // HYPHA Arts: FLUXUS 002

Live electronic and acoustic ambient music night. Join us and relax into the beautiful soundscape journeys of:
NELLA
ISAAC RUFUS
CLEM LLOBET
special guest:
SAYO - opening and closing the night!
Doors at eight. Cocktail social before and after the live music set.
NELLA - https://nellabanner.com - Nella is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and producer. They blend the influences of their musical roots in folk, jazz and classical with experimental compositions, contemporary improvisations and electronics; cultivating a sound that bridges genres. Performing with a loop pedal, Nella sculpts ambient orchestral landscapes of violin, synth and electronic drums in which their ethereal vocals weave.
ISAAC RUFUS - https://soundcloud.com/isaacrufus - Isaac explores the realms of acoustic and electronic sounds, weaving together the overlapping worlds into beautiful improvised experimental soundscapes. Through clarinet and self built electronic effects, he finds the use of amplification a wonderful sound microscope, allowing the listener's ears to be carried into the now enlarged world of sonic characters. Isaac’s artistic work revolves around magnifying these subtle sound worlds and inviting people to share, explore and play with the physicality of sound.
CLEM LLOBET - https://alonetone.com/clem/ - Clem's set will take you on a journey through imaginary soundscapes. Expect some familiar spaces, and some unfamiliar. Close your eyes, relax, and let the sound guide your steps. Clem's been experimenting with sounds for over a decade. This current set blends prepared canvas of his own field recordings and improvised voltage-controlled instruments. (Nerdy lineup notes: field recordings processed with granular tools, Ciat Lonbarde ensemble)

Public Disco x SLAB Ft Justin Martin & Nala | Open Air Day Party
15:00-22:00 // SATURDAY JULY 20 @ City Centre Artist Lodge, 2111 Main St, Vancouver, BC
Public Disco is partnering with SLAB for a day party to remember featuring West Coast favourite Justin Martin alongside Mi Domina label founder Nala from Los Angeles.
The event will take over Main Street's City Centre Artist Lodge, a motel turned cultural hub in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. This is the first collaboration between Public Disco, known for activating unconventional urban spaces with daytime dancing opportunities, and SLAB, an events series presented by Max Ulis who is known for his curation at BC festivals such as Bass Coast and New Forms.
Justin Martin [ SAN FRANCISCO, USA ]
Nala [ LOS ANGELES, USA ]
+ TWO LOCAL FAVOURITES ANNOUNCED SOON!
Feeding off the energy of the San Francisco underground, Justin [ https://www.soundcloud.com/justin-martin-music ] was intrinsically involved with the development of Dirtybird records, appearing on its first four releases. Justin was soon ready to take flight, releasing a string of solo EPs that flaunted a very unique sound and garnered further respect among fellow DJs and heavyweights of the scene. Music journalists typically describe Justin’s sound as ‘melodic and tough’ with his music encapsulating both melody and emotional depth yet always with enough undeniable ass-shaking properties to translate to the floor.
Nala [ https://www.soundcloud.com/thisisnala ] is an indie dance, house, & techno producer and singer based out of Los Angeles. She got her start playing in underground nightclubs where she developed a reputation as a reliable tastemaker and energetic performer. Her knowledge of house, indie dance, electro, and breaks helped establish her "as one of Miami's top female DJs and certainly an act making some serious strides on the circuit." (EARMILK). After getting picked up by Claude VonStroke, Nala released a series of notable EPs on popular labels such as Dirtybird, Diynamic, and Pets Recordings. In 2022, Nala launched her own label, Mi Domina, where she released two EPs in the acid house and techno genre with support from DJs such as Amine Edge & Dance to Jackmaster.

ORIGINS OF DANCE MUSIC ☀︎ Public Disco pays homage to the rich and diverse history of dance music, rooted in the pioneering efforts of Black, Queer, and Trans communities in Chicago and New York. Locally, it flourished within alternative art spaces and iconic gay clubs such as Graceland, Gandydancer, Faces, and the Odyssey. Throughout its evolution, dance music culture has been a beacon of acceptance and diversity, with trailblazers like Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan leading the way. We invite you to join us in honouring this profound legacy, actively involving Black, Queer, and Trans communities in local dance music culture and and celebrating their invaluable contributions to its development, for without them, we wouldn't be here today.

TSVI (Guglielmo Barzacchini) is a leading light of the London’s rave underground scene, and he is the co-founder of the UK-based record label Nervous Horizon, which is shaping the contemporary sound of highly percussive, stripped back, club music.
Barzacchini's debut album ‘Inner Worlds’, released in October 2018, is an exploration of his Hindu upbringing and the Sufi Islam introduced by his partner. He has received support from Aphex Twin, Gilles Peterson, Kode9 (Hyperdub), Mike Paradinas (Planet Mu) and many more. In recent years, he performed at CTM festival 2019 at Berghain, Field Day London, No Bounds Festival, and he also toured internationally in Europe as well as in China, Japan, Korea, and more.
In late 2019, Barzacchini made his debut on London-based label AD93 with his new alias, Anunaku; the project is strictly focused on dance floor material within the 125-130bpm spectrum and it explores the use of various drums from around the world combined with elements of UK underground club music.

Kai Bradley [ Elsewhere ]
cy.matic (visuals)
genres: dnb / jungle / techno / ambient / 110~170+ BPM deep end bass
The Elsewhere series continues with a deeper night with some out of town quality friends - Limnal (Nelson) + Wolf Machina (Calgary) + Looting (Victoria)
These guys have been continuously working towards creating new soundscapes in the deeper domains of modern electronic music in British Columbia.
Local support from Bronwyn / IHA / Kai Bradley - who have been consistently supporting the Elsewhere nights with some of the most current electronic music out there.
LOOTING (Resonance / Victoria) - Andrew has been producing, djing, and hosting events in BC for over a decade. Consistently pushing underground and emerging artists and styles while creating music and DJ sets that blend jungle, modernist and classic hardcore, ukfunky, techno, experimental and banging club trax, dembow, reggaeton, hard drum, deconstructed club, footwork and everything in between. Focusing one mind bending blends using a consistently evolving palette of emergent sounds and hardcore energy.
WOLF MACHINA ( Radiate / Calgary) - Wolf Machina’s cohesive yet formless range of style glides through different tempos. Feeling harmonious with his arsenal of hardware machines, he fuses dark ravey textures with heavy percussion and knocking bass lines into a hybrid twist of his own. A quartre of the influential Radiate (YYC), Wolf Machina brings forth not only technical live skills but also a wealth of experience in organizing events spanning the past ten years. As seasoned event curators, Radiate provides a platform to showcase the next generation of young and upcoming artists. This platform not only amplifies emerging voices but also serves as a beacon for the diverse sounds within the electronic music community.
LIMNAL (Nelson) - Drawing inspiration from across the musical spectrum, Limnal settles in the undefined spaces between genres. Exploring broken beats, heady techno and leftfield bass music, he challenges listeners to look beyond convention and toward a more nuanced sense of being. Sounds to move to, sounds to lose yourself within~
BRONWYN b2b IHA - Cute yet uncompromising back2back duo with some of the freshest weirdest modern music, these two local faves are well versed and present in Vancouver's underground scene.
KAI BRADLEY - One of the best crate diggers around, Kai has been silently killing the dj game for some time playing a range of styles including leftfield techno/breaks/post dubstep.
CY.MATIC (Visuals / Vancouver) - Unique blend of Point Cloud scans and Touch Designer mastery.

Hidden Spheres [ Rhythm Section International | MANCHESTER, UK ]

Pacific Rhythm presents and evening with Manchester's Hidden Spheres and DJ D.DEE.
Tom Harris AKA Hidden Spheres first made his mark on the underground circuit with his release ‘The Bloos’ on legendary Motor City label Moods & Grooves. He is however most well-known for his continually repressed and in demand EP ‘Waiting’, the debut release, which graced the top of many end of year lists. Within the same year Hidden Spheres made his debut on Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section with the EP ‘Well Well’ and reached top 10 spots in dance charts around the globe and 2017 saw Hidden Spheres also make waves with his release ‘It Ain’t Easy’. He then began his monthly show ‘Fruit Merchant’ on NTS. The show has now evolved into his new record label and musical outlet where he has multiple outputs released. More recently, Harris has put out solid EPs on Church, Scissor and Thread, Oath and a track on CC:DISCO!’s second First Light compilation.
As a DJ, Hidden Spheres draws from all his musical knowledge, always aspiring for togetherness and inclusiveness on the dance floor. Hidden Spheres is still on the rise with more to come!

It's honestly a dream come true & a full circle moment for me to be hosting Sasha after what feels like life times of healing through her selections. Her mixes have held me through so much. Loss, grief, heartbreak, losing myself, finding myself, falling in love again, deep depression, moments of pure joy, countless sunrises, and so many notable times ~ the list really goes on. She selects music from the heart that you the listener can truly hear and feel the story she's telling through time, space & sound. We share a lot of parallels in our journey and i'm deeply inspired by her.
She has (in my opinion) been one of the main djs really laying mixes out in the way she does ~ the way so many are now evoking. Less about the mixing and more about the emotion and the story it's telling. Truly timeless pieces of art that you can go back to time and time again.

I'll never stop putting this guy on. Certainly one to watch. Expect maximum vibes.

May 31 & Jun 1 // Lobe: Umbel, Release by Loscil (2 listening times)
18:00 (doors) 18:30 (1st listen) 19:15 (intermission) 19:45 (2nd listen) 21:00 (end) // FRIDAY MAY 31 & SATURDAY JUNE 1 @ Lobe Studios, 713 E Hastings St, Vancouver, BC
Loscil marks the release of Umbel with a series of deep listening sessions in 4DSOUND at Lobe on May 31st and June 1st.
Umbel is the third in a series of photo/music projects by Scott Morgan, aka loscil. Presented as a photo zine in tandem with an album of music (CD & digital), Umbel follows previous offerings Faults, Coasts, Lines and Lux: Refractions, combining photography and long form electronic music.
For each of the four sessions at Lobe, the album will be presented in spatial audio as a continuous mix. As a celebration of the release of this new work, hardcopies of the Umbel zine and CD will be available to purchased at these events.
Umbel, the zine, collects a series of full colour photos taken in the dwindling light of dusk under a blossoming maple tree. Long exposures capture painted light and a shadowy canopy under a dimming sky. The images are gestural and murky, with light layered and smeared. The music is similarly removed from real time: synthesized passages are looped, layered, and repeated, feeding back into themselves to form a contracting density.

FRIDAY MAY 24 – 07:00 MONDAY MAY 27 @ Meadows of Cel7wet Festival Grounds. Cel7wet te Secwépemc'ulucw, BC ~40 Minutes East of Kamloops
NOTE: https://www.facebook.com/TheFestiveOwl/posts/pfbid02TbBESaHQfg15eNsZDKyPyLkJsWK5jyAJUHwiUa458rdn6JMJBXGpzX631SxEY57nl >> Hey it's adekn here. We're definitely not cancelling, but we do admit the struggle of covering deposits & production and trying to budget for improvements while quite a few peeps have told us they haven't gotten their tickets yet. Our aim is to keep ticket costs as low as possible. Adding a tiers as we get closer to the fest would lead to quick boosts in sales, but we'd much rather have people pay a lower cost earlier cause we know it's tough out there in this economy 😉 I'm gonna make a poll on Instagram [ https://www.instagram.com/deeprootsmusicfestival ] to see who is planning on attending but hasn't bought their tickets yet and that'll help us decide how to proceed. If we can get enough sales in the next week or so it would go a long way towards making sure all our ducks are in the same row as early as possible. Then we can just quack our way to the festival stress-free. Just bein' real with y'all ♥️ Much love, -Kades

Glass. Friends. Camping. Food. Fun.
Join us for the ultimate grassroots glassblowing experience.
The Great Canadian Glass Gathering is an arts festival centred around the love of glassblowing, cannabis, and community. We like to think the event offers a little something for everyone: whether you simply want to listen to some great bands while you watch a glass wizard sculpt a dragon, or you are that glass wizard - we want to offer you the best time possible.
Enjoy heady culture 💎
Between the local glass art delights on display, killer munchies, live entertainment, and a tent full of Canada’s finest glassblowers creating works of art in front of your eyes, you’re certain to have an experience to remember. Like to camp and spend time in nature? Some people pop by for a night or two, but many others choose to camp on the event site in gorgeous D’arcy, BC for the weekend.
Come get melty 🔥
Glass artists, no matter what skill level, are welcomed. This is a great place to connect with like-minded people and get some collaborations in, as well as display or vend your glass while getting a chance to engage with the community. More about the artists....
SYNKRO: Manchester’s Joe McBride pens elaborate, emotive & intellectual soundscapes, drawing in influences across a spectrum of bass culture and electronica. Having released with Exit Records, Brownswood, Styrax, Auxiliary & Med School, as well as remixes for Model 500, Snow Patrol, Lowb & a plethora more, Synkro has most recently found a home at R&S sister label ‘Apollo’. Major support for Synkro’s music has come from names like Chris Coco, Giles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Prefuse 73 and dBridge. A truly staple artist in the timeline of UK Bass.
SOFTCORESOFT: Softcoresoft began her DJ and producer life in 2015. In 2017, she co-curated the 43-track compilation Power Puerto Rico. Every other month, she hosts Ravelength on Montréal-based online radio station n10.as, showcasing mainly women-identified producers and selectors through guest mixes and interviews. Internationally, she has played Berlin's Urban Spree, Polygon, Barcelona's LAUT, and Norway's International Bergen Festival, and Mutek editions in Montreal and Japan. Softcoresoft has long been a Discwoman collaborator, playing at their events in both Montreal and Brooklyn and releasing a well-received Discwoman mix in February 2018. Her music fuses techno, acid and electro - with higher BPMs but deeper melodic content drawing from early hypnotic trance and industrial sensibilities. Softcoresoft provides a voyage for the mind and a prompt for the dancing body.
NO WAY BACK: Koosh, Danuel Tate and The Mole all have histories reaching back decades with their own claims to fame. Last year's Wonderment saw the three join forces in an epic nod to the classic era of Acid House in the late 80s. We are pleased to present the return of No Way Back for Wonderment-at-Night's opening showcase of Victoria BC live electronic dance music performances.
RIGHTEOUS RAINBOWS OF TOGETHERNESS: Having graced BC festival stages from Bass Coast to Rifflandia, Righteous Rainbows have cemented their place as local legends. Neil and Thomas have turned to an exploration of breakbeat influences further expanding their live grooves into new vistas of funk and shuffle.
More artist information will be available soon at [ www.wonderment.ca ] or on the facebook event profiles for each of the Wonderment-at-Night events.
Wonderment park events are free in part because we focus our resources on the sound and music, and our audience takes care of their own needs. We take cues from the Burning Man festival with respect to commerce and environmental care. We eschew traditional festival infrastructure so we can all share in an immersive music experience in a natural park environment.
We encourage an individual and collective DIY ethos, and we appreciate your help in this. It’s great to see people supporting the local businesses around our events, or getting creative with picnic ideas, and then packing out what gets brought in. For a festival of our size, we have a remarkably light environmental footprint thanks to our audience.
- Maps and details about each of our event locations may be found on our website.
- There are no concessions or vending on site at our park events. There are food/drink options near each of the venues.
- Prepare for hot days with water, sunscreen and shade - We can’t stress this enough, especially the water part!
- Pack-it-in, pack-it-out. Less work for our volunteers and less trash all around.
- The capital regional district prohibits smoking and vaping of any kind in victoria area parks. Thems the rules – Maximum fine is $2000!
- KIDS ARE WELCOME at most events! (not the 19+ night events though)
- No dogs please! Dogs can sometimes act erratically amidst crowds and sound systems, please leave them at home! (Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals are of course ok!)
Our Sunday and Monday ambient park events are held at venues with playgrounds and public washroom facilities either on site or immediately adjacent to the event area. The Saturday evening at Songhees Park Plaza / Johnson Street Bridge is more dance-oriented and will have more of a concert crowd sort of atmosphere which may not suit all kids. The night-time events at the Victoria Event Centre (1915 Broad Street) are all 19+ licensed events.
Wonderment is presented by the Garden City Electronic Music Society with the support of the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the Capital Regional District and the City of Victoria.
Wonderment is also supported by DL Sound, Deepwest Soundsystem, Victoria Events Centre, Constellate Talent, Inn at Laurel Point, Monday Magazine, Capital Daily, Exclaim!, and the Georgia Straight.

Femme Dress code: Dress what makes you inspired to become your best Femme Fatale.
Ultimately, a femme fatale wears whatever makes her feel fabulous. When she's pleased with her ensemble, she walks around with unmistakable confidence. Femme fatales don’t need to wear extra risqué clothes because the way they carry themselves does that work for them. Having a naturally sexy, mysterious, and seductive personality is what draws people in.
Sumptuous evening wear, like silk cocktail dresses. Also, make sure to have the perfect red dress for your complexion. If you prefer jeans over dresses, grab a great pair of leather pants. For vintage sophistication, wear a pair of high-waisted jeans. Experiment with fun and chic accessories—wear bedazzled fishnet tights or slip into a fur coat. Want to look like a legendary femme fatale from the silver screen, add dark, sexy, and retro pieces to your wardrobe. Pick clothes that are well-cut and draw subtle attention to your curves in a tasteful way. Opt for darker colours such as black, maroon, or emerald green. Red lipstick is a must!
General Dress code: Dress to impress to grab the attention of a Femme Fatale that is sitting by the bar or VIP table. First impression is always an act of attraction. Fetish, glamour, suits, and sexy risque clothing is all you have to make an impression.
Vancouver has a few excellent options for clothing to buy. Deadly Couture, JQ Clothing, Models Express, UltraLove, and second-hand or thrift stores are a few great suggestions to get some ideas and help with a full and mindful expression experience for this night. Please help support our local retail stores and buy that perfect outfit for this event and will even help build your wardrobe for future events.

FREE // May 4 // Q7 Studios: Chimerik’s Virtual Live Art Database Launch Party
15:00-18:00 // SATURDAY MAY 4 @ Q7 Studios, 77 East 7th Ave, Vancouver, BC
You are invited to an afternoon of community dialogue and a guided walk-through of Chimerik 似不像’s newly developed Virtual Live Art database. Gather over light snacks and refreshments, and ponder new possibilities for New Media arts.
The idea for the Virtual Live Art Database was born at the height of the pandemic, when the live arts sector was challenged with having to shift from a physical stage to a virtual stage, from presenting in person to entirely online. We are thrilled to share what we have learnt thus far with the community and hope we can reflect together on how we can continue to integrate these learnings into the future.
About the initiative: At Chimerik 似不像, we’ve long observed a gap in the integration of digital technology with live-performance art. It's a struggle many artists encounter, navigating necessary softwares without adequate resources or support, which only further perpetuates the inaccessibility of New Media arts. This is why we developed the Virtual Live Art database, to make technology more accessible to our artistic community. By spotlighting artists and their innovative contributions, we're fostering collaboration and community spirit, focusing on the collective rather than the individual.

May 10 // Rio Theatre: The Rio Theatre's 15th Anniversary Party
19:00 (doors) 20:00 (show) 22:30 (dance party) // FRIDAY MAY 10 @ The Rio Theatre, 1660 E Broadway, Vancouver, BC
Can you believe it's been 15 years...? Neither can we!
To celebrate our incredible run of being Vancouver's favourite independently owned and operated cinema and live event space, we're throwing a big ol' party.... And you're invited!
Come join us and reminisce about some of the many crazy adventures over the past 15 years - from going head-to-head (and winning) against former Premiere Christy Clark and BC's ridiculously antiquated liquor laws, our awe-inspiring community-supported crowd-finding campaigns to #LightUptheRio and even #SavetheRio, to the fun times we had LARP-ing as the Andy Kaufman-esque #RioSportsBar - and everything in between!
We've assembled a who's-who of some of our favourite local performers to make the night special, and are keeping the doors open late for a killer dance party featuring DJ Mark Woodyard!

Movement, breath work, sound bath, and gentle touch session. Lobe Studio x Move for Cures collaboration.
We are excited to collaborate with Lobe Studio to offer an unique movement and sound experience. Space will be limited to ensure you receive the full experience. Ticket sales profits go to support rare disease initiatives. There is a sliding scale to provide accessible pricing.
What to expect:
Join us for an opportunity to experience the subtle practices of yoga in combination with the vibrational sound healing with Himalayan sound bowls.
Enjoy a 75 minute gentle yoga practice with Christine and Patricia. In these sessions you will be offered gentle assists including the use of props and acupressure. You can expect the class to have elements of Asana (movement), Pranayama (breath work), meditation, Yoga Nidra (rest), and sound healing.
Everything you need for the class will be provided, come as you are. No experience is required. These sessions are trauma-informed and limited in size. Please be aware that the practice will be in a darkroom with loud music.
About the instructors:
Patricia (she/her) is a Dharma yoga, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi instructor. She has been teaching since 2014, sharing the knowledge she has received from all her teachers. Patricia has dedicated her life to the Yoga teachings of Sri Dharma Mittra - a yoga practice beyond the poses and recognizes the importance of reducing harmful actions. You can expect her offerings to be rooted in Ahimsa (non-violence) and connection to one another. She has training in Thai Massage, TCM, and Training clients with physical disabilities.
Christine (she/her) honours the body and mind's ability to grow, adapt and heal with every new life experience. Give yourself permission to be nurtured with a body-based practice to bring more awareness and connection with your mind and spirit. Through meditative breathing and gentle flows, Christine invites you to move with intention, inner strength and fluidity.
A little bit about Lobe Studio:
Founded in Vancouver in 2020, Lobe is the first dedicated spatial sound studio in North America to work with a permanently integrated 4DSOUND system. An array of speakers across the ceiling and under the floor, in conjunction with custom-designed vibroacoustic floor panels, entirely surround the listener in an immersive and haptic listening experience. Using 4DSOUND technology, sound ebbs and flows, forming sonic environments holographically and without perceivable sources.
